Overview

Guam is a U.S. territory as well as the southernmost and largest island of the Mariana Archipelago. The island is one of the United States’ most important military bases in the Pacific region. Originally, Guam was home to the Chamorro, a seafaring people who settled Guam and the Mariana Islands as early as around 2000 BC.

Guam is the easiest island in Micronesia to reach and is therefore often the main gateway for travelers heading into the region.

Security

Numbeo rates Guam’s Crime Index at 65, which is considered high. That puts Guam behind countries like Yemen or Somalia. It is strongly advised not to be out alone at night.

We visited Guam in 2024 and did notice that some areas are quite run down, but still, we did not feel uneasy or insecure at any time. Overall, Guam is a very popular vacation destination.

Best Time

Guam’s climate is humid and tropical. There is a rainy season from June to September and a dry season from December to May. During the rainy season, the risk of typhoons also increases, although this is relatively rare. However, even during the dry season, there can still be heavy rain showers.

Temperatures remain fairly constant year-round, usually between 28 and 30°C.
