The Marshall Islands are an island nation in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. They consist of 29 atolls and five individual islands, with a total land area of around 181 km². The islands belong to the Micronesia region.
Eniwetok Atoll and Bikini Atoll, where the United States carried out nuclear tests, are also part of the Marshall Islands.
Since October 21, 1986, the Marshall Islands have been an independent country in free association with the United States.
