Nauru is not a country you just stumble upon. You have to travel there very deliberately. Getting to Nauru is difficult and expensive, so of course you want to make the most of your time there and see everything.

What there is to see and do in Nauru can be found here: 16 sights in Nauru. 16 Highlights in Nauru.

How do you get from A to B in Nauru?

There is no public transport in Nauru, but there is a community bus that runs around the island during the day, more or less once per hour.

In theory, you could also explore the island on foot. The ring road is about 20 kilometers long and runs once around the entire island. However, daytime temperatures often rise to 30°C or more, so this is not recommended.

There are only very few taxis in Nauru, so the best option is to rent a vehicle and explore the island on your own.

Where can you rent a car?

There are no classic car rental companies in Nauru. That is why you should arrange a rental car in advance.

We rented a car through our hotel, “Goodworks Accommodation”.

For Nauru, an International Driving Permit is required.

Driving in Nauru

In Nauru, people drive on the left. Especially if you are not used to it, you should keep that in mind, because there is very little traffic on the roads that you can follow. You definitely do not want to end up driving on the wrong side of the road.

Nauru has a general speed limit of 50 km/h. In some places, the maximum speed is limited to 20 or 30 km/h.

Road network

Nauru’s total area is only 21 km², and the ring road is just under 20 kilometers long. The ring road is also well paved. The road from Aiwo to Buada Lagoon is paved as well. But if you turn off these roads and drive into inland, you will mostly be on gravel tracks.

You generally do not need navigation, because the island is only about 6 kilometers long and about 5 kilometers wide at its widest point.

Besides the ring road, there are only a handful of roads in the interior. Getting lost is almost impossible, and if it does happen, you can simply keep driving until you end up back on the ring road.

In Yaren, the ring road also circles the airport. During takeoffs and landings, the road is even closed.

How much does a rental car cost?

Since there are no official rental companies, it is difficult to answer this question. We paid 70 AUD per day for our car, and we assume it is similar everywhere.

Fuel costs around 2 AUD per liter. But in Nauru you will hardly drive even 50 kilometers to see everything, so fuel costs are negligible.
